History of the Department

Seychelles established its Ministry for Foreign Affairs after gaining its independence from the United Kingdom in 1976. The first minister who assumed the role of Minister for Foreign Affairs was the first President of the Republic of Seychelles, Sir James Mancham.

It was common and accepted practice for the President of the Republic to serve as Minister for Foreign Affairs. After President Mancham, three other Seychelles’ Presidents, namely, Mr. Albert René, Mr. James Michel, and Mr. Danny Faure have held the portfolio of Foreign Affairs during their time in office. This portfolio has also been held by Vice President Vincent Meriton.

Since its establishment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under various names, has been headed by 14 Ministers. The current Minister responsible for this portfolio, with effect from November 2020, is Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde.
