Newly-accredited High Commissioner of New Zealand pays courtesy call on Minister Radegonde

06.05.2022

The new High Commissioner of New Zealand to Seychelles, H.E Mr. Michael Upton, paid a courtesy call on Minister Radegonde following his accreditation ceremony at State House on Tuesday 3rd May 2022.

Minister Radegonde was himself accredited as non-resident High Commissioner to New Zealand from 1998-2003 and shared a warm exchange with His Excellency as representatives of island nations with similar values and interests. As members of the Commonwealth, the cooperation between Seychelles and New Zealand extends through a number of domains, with the High Commissioner thanking Seychelles for support to some of its recent candidatures in international fora.

High Commissioner Upton informed the Minister that New Zealand’s key focus over the coming years is to address climate change and his government has already committed significant resources to climate financing, biodiversity and adaptation until 2025. This is in line with New Zealand’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions by 50% by 2025, and becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.

Minister Radegonde expressed that, due to Seychelles’ limited resources, it is reassuring that larger countries such as New Zealand can advocate the concerns of all island states facing the worst effects of climate change.

Both countries share a vision of a more peaceful and secure Indian Ocean region as well as hoping for swift resolutions to international conflicts.

High Commissioner Upton will be based at the New Zealand High Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
