Ambassador Madeleine and High Commissioner Glekin discuss Seychelles – UK relations
The Resident British High Commissioner to the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Mr Jeff Glekin paid a courtesy call on the Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ian Madeleine on Thursday 11 September 2025, at Maison Quéau de Quinssy.
High Commissioner Glekin provided Ambassador Madeleine with an overview of the work he and his team have been undertaking during his tenure. Since assuming office in 2023, the High Commissioner highlighted that support to local authorities has focused on key areas including security, transparency and good governance, tackling illicit finance, police cooperation, and cybersecurity. Assistance has been delivered both through the sharing of expertise and by facilitating capacity-building initiatives.
Ambassador Madeleine conveyed his gratitude to High Commissioner Glekin and the British Government for the high level of cooperation that the UK has secured with the Seychelles during the years and described the relations between the two countries as historic and unique. He also expressed his appreciation to the UK’s commitment to building capacity in fields which are of great importance to the Seychelles.
Climate change was another key issue discussed by the two diplomats. Ambassador Madeleine emphasized the need for enhanced support on this front, not only at the bilateral level but also within multilateral fora, stressing that stronger international backing is essential to achieve the objectives of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He further reiterated Seychelles’ challenges in accessing climate finance due to its high-income status.
The discussions also covered trade and development cooperation, with particular attention to the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI).
