AU and Seychelles Advance Cooperation on Food Security, Blue Economy and Climate Resilience
Sustainable development, food security, and resilience to climate change were among the key issues discussed during a meeting between H.E. Mr. Moses Vilakati, African Union (AU) Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, and Ambassador Beryl Samson on Thursday, 20 November 2025, at Maison Quéau de Quinssy.
Both diplomats reaffirmed that agriculture remains central to ensuring food security across the continent. With the support of the African Union Commission, Seychelles will continue to advance climate-resilient agriculture, aquaculture development and capacity-building programmes aimed at strengthening national and regional food systems.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of both responsible and sustainable use of ocean resources by promoting blue jobs in sectors such as fisheries, marine conservation and sustainable tourism. H.E. Commissioner Vilakati congratulated Seychelles for its leadership as a strong advocate for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly in its roles as the AU’s Blue Economy Champion and Chair of the African Island States Climate Commission (AISCC).
He further noted Seychelles’ successful innovative solutions for climate resilience through financing instruments such as the Blue Bond and the Debt-for-Nature Swap. He emphasised that these models could be shared with other AU member states seeking to strengthen their own resilience and sustainability frameworks.
Both parties agreed on the need for a unified African position on climate action and acknowledged the shared vulnerabilities of SIDS to climate change. They also discussed enhancing support through initiatives such as the European Union Circular Strategy, the Drought Protocol, and strengthened climate diplomacy.
The discussion on the establishment of a regional meteorological station for island states and the development of a multi-hazard early warning system culminated in the proposal to form a Joint Working Group to advance these initiatives.
Ambassador Samson extended her best wishes to H.E. Commissioner Vilakati for productive deliberations during the Dialogue Session of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) Sub-Committee on Environmental Issues, taking place from 20–21 November in Seychelles.
