BELGIUM REAFFIRMS SUPPORT TO SEYCHELLES IN ANTI-PIRACY EFFORT

The Minister for Defence of the Kingdom of Belgium, Mr Pieter de Crem, met with President James Michel at State House this morning to discuss the coordinated approach in the fight against piracy, and the use of the Seychelles as an international anti-piracy hub.
“ We are grateful to the Kingdom of Belgium in its support as part of the Atalanta operation, and we hope to see further development of this operation in the future,” said President Michel.
President Michel and Minister de Crem discussed the challenges faced by the EUNAVOR anti-piracy operation, together with the Seychelles Coast Guard and other international partners.
Minister de Crem noted that Kenya and Seychelles are ‘two small but reliable states’ working in the fight against piracy, and reaffirmed his support to the Seychelles endeavours to strengthen its capacity to protect its waters, as well as increase the level of surveillance of its Exclusive Economic Zone.
