February 20, 2024

A symbolic handing over ceremony of sports equipment took place on Friday, 16th February 2024, at the Cascade District Administration Office, as part of the ongoing ‘Adopt a District’ programme, a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism and the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.

The Cascade District was the recent beneficiary of this programme, with the Honorary Consul for Seychelles in La Reunion, Mr. Jean-Claude Pech, sponsoring the donation of 100 balls, including those for football, basketball, and volleyball, along with a number of sports gears of varying sizes. In the absence of Mr. Pech, Mr. Ralph Agrippine, Principal Counsellor within the Foreign Affairs Department, presented the equipment to Honourable Philip Monthy, Member of the National Assembly for Cascade, and Ms. Begita Melanie, District Administrator for Cascade, during the handing over ceremony. Also in attendance was Ms. Shirley Low-Meng, Director for Consular and Diaspora Affairs.

Some of these equipment and sports gears will be presented to sports teams based in the district while the remaining ones will be utilised for various community activities, including sports-based mentorship programmes, holiday activities, and district sports events.

In his remarks, Honourable Monthy highlighted the significance of the donation, stating, “Cascade has quite a number of sports teams, including the Cascade Bullets basketball team, Cascade volleyball team, and several footballers who play in neighbouring teams such as Foresters and Au Cap. These equipment will surely be put to good use.

On his part, Mr. Agrippine emphasised the importance of seizing opportunities provided by the ‘Adopt a District’ programme, encouraging District Authorities around Seychelles to solicit assistance needed for their communities.
