Ethiopia launches new visa-on-arrival and E-visa arrangements for African citizens

In line with the African Union agenda of free movement of people within the continent, Ethiopia has, as of October 30th, started granting visas on arrival for all citizens of African Union (AU) member states.

H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the AU Commission, speaking at the official launch event in Addis Ababa said, “This is a truly historic moment. By taking this decision, Ethiopia is, once again, demonstrating its commitment to the ideals of our Union and the principles which inform pan-Africanism”. He further commended Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Ethiopian Government for this landmark step.

Visa-On-Arrival

Who is eligible?

Any person with a valid passport of an AU member state will be issued an Ethiopian visa on arrival with no preconditions.

How can one be acquired?

  1. Visitors can travel directly to Ethiopia and get a visa on arrival by filling a basic information form and paying a visa fee, after which entry will be granted.
  2. Ethiopian Airlines ticket offices worldwide are also authorized to process visa-on-arrival applications forms and fees.

Port of Entry

Dedicated immigration counters for the new visa arrangement have been set up at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport with the service due to be extended to all Ethiopian international airports and ports of entry in the near future.

E-Visa

Any citizen holding a valid passport of an AU member state can gain entry into Ethiopia through an optional E-visa service which is available to almost every country globally whereby applicants may have their visa requests approved or denied online.
