A delegation from the European Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) headed by EU NAVFOR – Somalia Atalanta Operation Commander, Vice Admiral José M. Núñez Torrente, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr Sylvestre Radegonde on Thursday 05 May 2022.
The call at Maison Quéau de Quinssy addressed matters on maritime security and EUNAVFOR’s significant contribution to maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean. It also coincides with the port visit of the two EUANVFOR warships, ITS BERGAMI and FRS FLOREAL, currently berthing at Port Victoria.
During the discussions, Minister Radegonde congratulated the EUNAVFOR for the recent counter-narcotics operation undertaken by one of its vessels FRS FLOREAL, which saw the seizure of at least 2 tons of illicit drugs, some of which were destined for Seychelles.
Both parties expressed their concerns over the concentration of drug trafficking within the region. They considered strengthening capacity-building exercises to reinforce operational efficiency and coordination at sea to address illicit maritime crimes.
The EUNAVFOR delegation comprised Political Advisor, Mr Marcel Kaal, EUNAVFOR military assistant, Mr Jorge Fernandez De Navarrete Bedoya and EUNAVFOR Liaison Officer in Seychelles, Mr Juan Canovas.
Also present for the call was the Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Vivianne Fock Tave, the Director-General for Regional Affairs, Steve Lalande and other senior officials of the Department.
