European Union Introduces the Entry/Exit System for Non-EU Nationals
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism wishes to inform the public that the European Union (EU) will implement the Entry/Exit System (EES) on 12 October 2025. The EES is a new digital border management system for border crossings into the 29 Schengen Member States.
The system will record information of non-EU nationals travelling for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period), including:
- Travel document details (full name, date of birth, nationality)
- Dates and places of entry and exit
- Biometric data, such as facial images and fingerprints
The EES will be gradually implemented across Schengen countries, with full operation expected by 10 April 2026. During this period, biometric data may not be collected at every border crossing, and passports will continue to be stamped as usual.
The EES aims to make border crossings faster and more efficient, with automated processes and options for travellers to pre-register their data via self-service systems or the Travel to Europe mobile app.
Special provisions apply to accredited diplomats, Heads of State, government officials, and dual nationals holding an EU passport.
Travellers are advised to consult the official EES website for detailed information: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/ltr
NB: The 29 Schengen Member States participating in the Entry/Exit System are:
Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Bulgaria, and Romania.
