Introduction of the Online Traveller Declarations
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora wishes to inform the public that the Government of the Republic of South Africa has introduced a mandatory Online Traveller Declaration system, effective 1 July 2026.
All travellers entering or departing South Africa through air, land, sea, or rail ports of entry are required to submit an online traveller declaration prior to travel.
The South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) enables travellers to fulfil their legal obligation to declare goods in their possession, including currency, through convenient digital channels such as the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Online Traveller Declarations Portal, the SATMS mobile application and the scan-to-Declare QR codes.
Travellers are strongly advised to complete and submit their online declaration at least 24 hours before their scheduled departure to facilitate a smoother travel process.
