New Seychelles Ambassador Accredited to FAO and IFAD

Ambassador Bernard Shamlaye has presented his credentials as Seychelles Governor for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to Mr Carlos Seré, Associate Vice President of the said organisation in Rome, Italy.
Ambassador Shamlaye presented President James Michel’s greetings to the President of IFAD, Kanayo Nwanze, expressing appreciation for his visit to Seychelles in March this year and for the signature of the Competitive Local Innovations for Small-scale Agriculture (CLISSA) project.
The Ambassador highlighted the growing importance that Seychelles is placing on the Blue Economy, including the judicious exploitation of ocean resources for food, and support for small fishing enterprises. Mr Seré reiterated that the IFAD President’s visit to Seychelles had been very successful and that IFAD is giving more attention to issues of importance to small island developing states (SIDS).
During his visit to Rome, the Ambassador also presented his credentials as the Permanent Representative of Seychelles to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, to Mr José Graziano da Silva, Director General of the organisation.
The Ambassador conveyed to Mr da Silva the greetings of President Michel and his appreciation of the Director General’s work in FAO. He informed the DG about Seychelles promotion of the Blue Economy and referred to the high level meeting on ‘New approaches to eradicate hunger in Africa’ held in Addis Ababa in June, at which the country advocated for attention to be given to ocean issues as the ocean is a key resources base important for the promotion of food security.
The Director General expressed his appreciation of Seychelles’ position on the Blue Economy and oceans and its efforts in the promotion of agriculture and of food security. He commended Seychelles for becoming a party to the Convention on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.
The Ambassador welcomed the very recent appointment of the FAO Representative for Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles and briefed the DG on projects for which Seychelles is requesting the support of the FAO Office in Madagascar. These are principally the formulation of the Seychelles National Agricultural Investment Programme, the Agro-Tourism Project, the Revival of the Livestock Sector Project and the follow-up to the mission to assess the damages caused by the extreme weather in January.
Ambassador Shamlaye took the opportunity to brief the Director General of Seychelles’ contribution to helping to unblock the political deadlock in Madagascar, under the aegis of the Indian Ocean Commission and SADC, and Seychelles’ expectation of the successful holding of elections according to the new timetable and the quick resumption of international assistance to Madagascar.
The Ambassador expressed Seychelles’ appreciation to both IFAD and FAO for their engagement in the United Nations Conference on Small Island Developing States to be held in Apia, Samoa in September 2014.
