President Faure addresses 73rd United Nations General Assembly

President Danny Faure began his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Monday 25th September by embracing ‘multilateralism’ and how this concept has underpinned the values of the United Nations since its creation.
Addressing the General Assembly Hall, President Faure drew the Assembly’s attention to the theme of the 73 Session – ‘Making the United Nations relevant to all people: Global leadership and shared responsibility for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies’. He noted that ‘sustainable societies’ held particular resonance with Seychelles and other Small Island States (SIDS), who are acutely affected by the adverse effects of climate change, which is an existential threat to the lives of people from SIDS.
He further highlighted that ‘Sustainability has always been and will continue to be at the heart of the development efforts of Seychelles”, that Seychelles with its fellow SIDS, have elaborated the concept of the Blue Economy to multiply the economic potential of its territorial waters whilst congruently protecting it for future generations.
In his final remarks, President Faure reiterated that Seychelles remains committed to the ideals of the UN and will remain an active voice within the organization. He concluded his speech in saying “Together, we continue to demonstrate the success and unrelenting power of diplomacy, and in the case of the smaller states like ours, we have also proven that might is not right”.
