President James Michel followed his state visit to India last week, with a one day stopover to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

During the one day visit President Michel conducted high level talks with the Abu Dhabi naval forces concerning military cooperation with the Seychelles People’s Defense Forces in the fight against piracy.

The UAE has agreed to help Seychelles with facilities and equipment to combat pirate attacks as well as develop a mechanism for protecting Seychellois fishermen when they go out to sea.

“We need to prepare ourselves in the long term to fight piracy as the Somali mainland problem and piracy will not be solved soon,” said President Michel.

President Michel said that Abu Dhabi had agreed to give Seychelles assistance with surveillance equipment as well additional expertise in maritime defence.
