Seychelles’ new ambassador to the Kingdom of Netherlands, Her Excellency Ms. Beryl Samson, presented her letter of credence to His Majesty King Willem-Alexander at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague on Friday 9th of November.

At the accreditation ceremony, Ambassador Samson expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the government and people of Seychelles to the Netherlands for the robust cooperative relationship shared between the two countries, and for the pivotal support granted to Seychelles during dire times of piracy when maritime security was being threatened.

As a strong advocate for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and the Blue Economy, Ambassador Samson elaborated on Seychelles’ ongoing national strategies and called upon the Netherlands for its continued support within the international community in the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the UN Our Ocean, Our Future: Call for Action.

HM Willem-Alexander, who is well-versed on SIDS issues, welcomed the innovative initiatives taken by Seychelles and its efforts to establish a vulnerability index that will allow for more targeted development assistance for SIDS.

His Majesty praised Seychelles as an example to the world in its approach to overcoming the challenges specific to its size and specificities. He congratulated Seychelles for its milestone achievements within the scope of its development agenda, and suggested that Seychelles could learn from their experience in areas of water management, food security and overall implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Discussions also extended to tourism, fisheries, climate change, economic resilience, post-Cotonou negotiations with the EU and the possibility of His Majesty visiting Seychelles.
