The Seychelles Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador Joseph Nourrice, has led a humanitarian Mission to Mali, on behalf of the African Union.

The Mission, which took place from the 10th to 16th November, was tasked with assessing the humanitarian situation in Mali; specifically the refugee situation and displaced persons following the military conflict last year that plunged the country into a crisis.

During his visit Ambassador Nourrice met with members of the new Government to be apprised of the national efforts being deployed to assist the displaced persons and refugees.

He described the initiatives as very positive and commendable, while also citing that the country is in dire need of assistance to complement the efforts of the government and civil society.

The visit was also presented an opportunity to hold discussions with the representatives of civil society groups within Mali.

The Ambassador described the visit as a success that offered fresh insight into the nature and scope of humanitarian work being undertaken in some part of our continent.

As part of the Mission, Ambassador Nourrice also presented a cheque of US$100,000 to the Minister for Labour, Social and Humanitarian Affairs Mr. Hamadou Konate as part of the AU contribution towards humanitarian assistance including victims of a recent flooding.
