Seychelles and Maldives celebrate visa waiver agreement with joint tree planting initiative in Malé
In a powerful symbol of growing bilateral ties and shared ecological commitment, Seychelles Minister Barry Faure and Maldivian Minister Iruthisham Adam today planted a tree each at Lonuziyaaray Park in Malé.
The tree planting ceremony was held to celebrate the official commencement of the visa waiver agreement between the two island nations, which came into effect on May 15th. Beyond marking a new era of seamless travel and closer diplomatic relations, the event highlighted both countries deeply rooted, shared belief in environmental stewardship, sustainability, and urgent climate action.
Sowing the Seeds for a Sustainable Future
The trees were planted as an official contribution to the Five Million Trees Project, a nation-wide environmental initiative launched by His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The project aims to plant five million trees across the Maldives by 2028 to enhance climate resiliency and safeguard the natural environment for future generations.
The high-level ceremony was attended by key dignitaries from both nations, including:
- Ralph Agrippine, Principal Counsellor of Seychelles Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora
- Senior officials from the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Senior officials from the Maldives Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy
By rooting these trees in the heart of Malé, the Maldives and Seychelles have underscored a collective message: the future of small island developing states relies entirely on the protection of their natural environments.
