Seychelles and Maldives strengthen cooperation on SIDS issues with the appointment of a new High Commissioner
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mr. Barry Faure, received the High
Commissioner-designate of the Republic of Maldives to the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Mr.
Masood Imad at Maison Quéau de Quinssy on Monday, 19 January 2026.
During their meeting, High Commissioner-designate Imad expressed his government’s interest in
offering more Seychellois students the opportunity to conduct their work placement and hospitality
training in Maldivian resorts.
The two diplomats also discussed the implementation of the Agreements that were signed in June
2023, which include a Bilateral Air Services Agreement and an MOU on youth development
cooperation.
They also touched on maritime security, whereby they noted that both countries faced similar
issues – drug trafficking and other illicit maritime activities, and listed the areas where enhanced
collaboration could take place.
The meeting ended with Minister Faure encouraging the Maldivian government to advocate for
the institutionalisation of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index, thereby enabling Small Island Developing States like Maldives and the Seychelles access funding to combat the effects of climate
change.
