May 15, 2024

The Foreign Affairs Department wishes to announce that the Government of Seychelles has endorsed the candidature of Mr. Vincent Meriton for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) in the election scheduled to take place in February 2025.

During his career as a politician, Mr. Meriton has held numerous portfolios in the government, as Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs, Health and Social Affairs, Information Technology, the Blue Economy and Entrepreneurship Development, and also as the Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles. During his tenure of office, Mr. Meriton has also championed Seychelles’ position on the Blue Economy on the international stage.

Mr Meriton’s core objective as Chairperson of the AUC is to significantly improve the implementation rate of the Commission’s executive decisions by addressing barriers to implementation and promoting accountability and compliance.

The Chairperson of the Commission is elected by the Assembly for a four-year term, renewable once. If elected, Mr. Meriton will succeed H.E. Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, who has held the position since 2017.
