Seychelles ambassador Ronny Jumeau was on Saturday elected one of two Vice-Presidents of the small island developing states’ (SIDS’) sustainable energy initiative, SIDS DOCK, for 2016-17.

Based in Belize, SIDS DOCK is the only organisation of small island developing states which is officially recognised by the United Nations as a UN-affiliated body. It is made up of members of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) who join it on a voluntary basis.

The election of its presidency, which was by acclamation, took place at the second session of the SIDS DOCK Assembly at the United Nations in New York on Saturday on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Mr Jumeau, who is Seychelles’ Ambassador for Climate Change and SIDS issues, will represent the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea region. Tuvalu (Pacific) is President and Bahamas is the other Vice-President for the Caribbean.

The same meeting also saw the appointment of Ms Wendy Isnard, Second Secretary in the Seychelles Mission to the UN in New York, nominated to the SIDS DOCK Credentials Committee.

Amb Jumeau is already on of two Vice-Chairs of the SIDS DOCK Executive Council and a member of the selections committee which will choose a Secretary-General for the organisation

SIDS DOCK promotes renewable energy and energy efficiency among AOSIS member countries as a catalyst for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.

It is called SIDS DOCK because it is designed as a “docking station” to connect the energy sector in SIDS with the global market for finance and sustainable energy technologies, including in the European Union and the United States.
