Seychelles’ First High Commissioner accredited to Bangladesh

On Thursday 8 August 2019, Mr. Selby Pillay became the first Seychelles High Commissioner to be accredited to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
This follows the presentation of his Letter of Credence to Bangladeshi President, H.E. Mr Abdul Hamid in the Credential Hall of the BangaBhahan, which is the official residence and principal workplace of the President. The credentials ceremony was conducted in the presence of the Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary, the Assistant Military Secretary to the President, and other high-ranking officials.
The new High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Mr Pillay conveyed to President Hamid, the Government and people of Bangladesh the warm greetings of friendship of the Seychelles President Danny Faure, as well as those of the Government and people of Seychelles.
The accreditation is testimony to the dedication of both countries to rally their efforts on areas of mutual interest, and to further boost the existing bonds and elevate our engagements to greater heights. Seychelles commends Bangladesh for their firm commitment to deepen the collaboration with Seychelles, as demonstrated last week through the accreditation of their new High Commissioner.
High Commissioner Pillay reassured the Bangladeshi President that during his tenure he “will vie to build upon the established foundation so that we may further cement our decades-long relationship for the mutual benefit of both nations”.
Both countries share similar challenges and support each other across different global platforms on matters related to the vulnerabilities of SIDS, and the urgency for global consensus on environmental protection.
As a country which is highly susceptible to climate change, and has experienced diverse impacts on its environment and people, Bangladesh is ready to collaborate with Seychelles, and are open to technical cooperation and exchanges concerning climate change adaptation, advocacy and disaster risk reduction.
Considering the organic farming methods, and innovative practices being employed in Bangladesh, there is potential to collaborate in the agricultural sector – which is an area of specialisation for Bangladesh. The fisheries industry of the country has also developed significantly, especially in aquaculture, noting that Seychelles is keen to share experiences and expertise in this area.
Another area in which Bangladesh shares similarity with Seychelles is their interest in advancing the merits of the Blue Economy globally. The 3rd Indian Ocean Rim Association Blue Economy Ministerial Conference will be held on 4-5 September 2019, in Dhaka, and Seychelles will be represented at the event which is being promoted by the host country.
In the meantime, both sides look forward to the conclusion of the Labour Cooperation agreement, and its successful implementation.
High Commissioner Selby Pillay was assisted during his brief visit to Dhaka by Seychelles Honorary Consul in Bangladesh, Mr Mohamed Amiruzzaman.
