Seychelles participates in the Archipelagic and Islands State Forum (AIS)

Special Envoy of President of Seychelles for ASEAN, His Excellency Mr. Nico Barito, represented Seychelles in the 2nd Senior Official Preparatory Meeting of the AIS Forum, held in Jakarta on 6th September 2018. In his remarks, Mr. Barito expressed on behalf of Seychelles, the highest admiration for the initiative undertaken by Indonesia as one of the biggest archipelagic nations, to assist small island states with issues of climate change. Seychelles highlighted its Blue Economy and other actions undertaken to eliminate the impact of climate change and the reduction of use of plastic in its communities and within the tourism industry.

During the event, the Seychelles representative also held discussions with an Indonesian multinational petro-chemical organization, who has offered to share its success in converting plastic waste into plastic asphalt for roads, and to assist in a pilot project of plastic recycling in Seychelles.

The 2 days of SOM, co-hosted by Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and UNDP- Jakarta, was attended by diplomatic representatives from Bahrain, Cuba, Cyprus, Fiji, Jamaica, Mauritius, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Timor Este, Tonga and United Kingdom.
