On Wednesday 29 April 2026, the Permanent Representative of Seychelles to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Vivianne FOCK TAVE, delivered a statement at a High-Level Open Debate of the UN Security Council on “The Safety and Protection of Waterways in the Maritime Domain”.

The high-level open debate, convened by the Kingdom of Bahrain under its presidency of the Security Council for the month of April, was due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that has affected the broader security of the maritime areas.

“Freedom of navigation at sea remains a fundamental right of all states and must not be weaponised to the detriment of states that rely heavily on maritime routes. We urge consistent respect of international law,” Ambassador Fock Tave stated.

She further placed Seychelles’ specific concerns saying that “restrictions on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz have significantly affected our economy. Rising fuel prices and supply chain disruptions threaten our economic well-being”.

The Seychelles Permanent Representative to the UN also pointed out that maritime security and freedom of navigation are a shared global responsibility. “The Security Council must look beyond the current emergency. The UN needs a more strategic approach to maritime security – our response to maritime security issues cannot be reactive. Evolving threats require continued prioritisation by the Council for the security and prosperity of all,” emphasised Ambassador Fock Tave.

She concluded by urging all parties to work towards a negotiated, sustainable and implementable solution.
