Seychelles Reaffirms Commitment to a Renewed OACPS at Special Session of Council of Ministers in Malabo
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Barry Faure, participated in the Special Session of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States’ (OACPS) Council of Ministers convened on the eve of the Summit.
The Special Session was held to consider and approve key outcome documents for the Summit, including the agenda, programme, and most notably, the draft Declaration of the Summit.
In his intervention, Minister Faure reaffirmed Seychelles’ full alignment with the Malabo Declaration and its vision for a renewed OACPS. On climate finance, he called on the international community to honour its commitments under global agreements. His proposal made from the floor to strengthen the draft Summit Declaration to reinforce the call to action was widely supported by members. The revised draft adopted by Council incorporates a new line in Paragraph 31 on Development Finance: “We commend the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its favourable Advisory Opinion on the obligations of States in respect of climate change.”
Minister Faure further reaffirmed Seychelles’ strong advocacy for the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI), describing it as a critical tool to ensure that global financing frameworks accurately reflect the development realities and vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and fragile economies.
The Seychelles Delegation also participated in the afternoon segment of the Session, which was a Dialogue with Strategic Partners. This Dialogue provided a platform for structured engagement, strategic alignment, and partnership building in support of a transformed and renewed OACPS in a changing world.
Seychelles’ delegation to the Council Meeting comprised of Mr. Kenneth Racombo, Ambassador of Seychelles in Brussels accredited to the OACPS; Mr. Marco Larsen, First Secretary and Desk Officer for the OACPS; and Mr. Rodney Sinon, Second Secretary at the Seychelles Embassy in Brussels.
