Seychelles represented at the 45th COMESA Intergovernmental Committee and Council of Ministers meetings
Ambassador Claude Morel, Permanent Representative to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Seychelles Resident Ambassador in Pretoria, represented Seychelles at the meetings of the 45th Intergovernmental Committee and Council of Ministers held in Lusaka, Zambia, from 25th -28th November 2024. The meetings coincided with the commemoration of the organisation’s 30th year anniversary.
Under the theme “Accelerating Regional Integration through the Development of Regional Value Chains in Climate Resilient Agriculture, Mining, and Tourism,” the meetings reviewed progress on key COMESA programmes and activities over the past year and considered the organization’s work programme for the coming year. Seychelles reaffirmed its commitment to these efforts and shared contributions in key areas.
Moreover, Seychelles commended the Republic of Burundi for successfully hosting the 23rd COMESA Summit in Bujumbura and also expressed appreciation to the COMESA Secretariat for its support towards Member States through their various programmes complementing regional development. Special recognition was given to the Secretariat’s assistance to the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), for hosting the Regional Validation Workshop on Developing Cost-Based Models for Sustainable Revenue Generation, in Seychelles in June, particularly as the Authority is undergoing significant changes.
Expanding on the infrastructure sector, Ambassador Morel emphasized the need for COMESA Secretariat to finalize discussions on the proposed regional shipping line for island and coastal states in the region’s effort to strengthen maritime connectivity and regional trade. As Chair of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), Seychelles further underscored the importance of collaboration between COMESA and the IOC, in the realisation of this important initiative.
Ambassador Morel was accompanied at the meetings by Second Secretary, Mrs. Nisha Chengo.
