Vice President Meriton addresses the National Assembly on occasion of World Day against Trafficking in Persons

On the occasion of the ‘World Day against Trafficking in Persons’, celebrated annually on 30 July, Vice President Vincent Meriton delivered a statement at the Seychelles National Assembly this morning.
“On this day, we are to look back on the measures taken by the Government and reinforce our engagement in the fight against this crime,” conveyed Vice President Meriton in his address.
As he mentioned the ratification of the Palermo protocol in 2004, the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons Act in 2014, the launching of the National framework and action plan on trafficking in persons in 2014, amongst other measures, the Vice President highlighted the efforts taken by the Government against the crime over the years.
Vice President Meriton raised awareness and added that “It is the Government’s responsibility to ensure that laws against trafficking of persons are respected. But it is also the responsibility of all our partners, civilian organizations and Seychellois in general, to report cases of human trafficking.”
Following his address, VP Meriton was asked a few questions by members of the National Assembly pertaining to such issues.
In concluding, the Vice President thanked all MDAs and international organizations for their role in actively helping Seychelles combat human trafficking, which has also resulted in Seychelles being upgraded to Tier 2 in the United States annual Trafficking in Persons Report 2019 (TIP Report).
