Vice President Vincent Meriton attends the Nor-Shipping Conference 2019

Vice President Vincent Meriton is currently in the Kingdom of Norway where he is attending a four-day conference on maritime shipping, Nor-Shipping Conference 2019.

Nor-Shipping is a unique platform that brings together various stakeholders with diverse regulatory and business interests in order to promote the mutually beneficial and sustainable development of the blue economy and maritime sectors globally.

The official opening ceremony was held today in the presence of the Crown Prince of Norway His Royal Highness Haakon Magnus, the Prime Minister of Norway Her Excellency Erna Solberg, High level Representatives of UN Global Compact, International Maritime Organization (IMO) and African Union.

Emphasis was put on the need for more coordination and transformation among maritime partners with the goal of reaching sustainable management of oceans.

Prior to the official opening, the Vice President delivered a keynote address to the High Level meeting on Ocean organized by the UN Global Compact to launch its new report, the Global Goals, Ocean Opportunities held on the 3rd of June at the Resident of the Prime Minister of Norway.

In his intervention, Vice President stated that “our policies have been geared towards, the advocacy for a zero waste circular economic model” and further indicated that “what we therefore aspire to see is the sustainable development of not just maritime sectors but also sustainable development across the whole of society”.

As a panelist, Vice President spoke about the various achievements Seychelles has done to address the political, regulatory and business aspects as captured in the Seychelles’ Blue Economy strategy.

This gathering included politicians, maritime executives, UN Representatives, academia and members of civil societies. The UN Global Compact report explores a multi-stakeholder approach to how ocean industries can deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while enabling sustainable business growth.

The Nor Shipping 2019 conference debates will continue tomorrow with a special high level event on Africa under the theme “Unlocking the full potential of Africa’s Blue Economy” to re-affirm high level commitment of Shipping Industries for the development of Africa’s blue economy.

Vice President Meriton is accompanied by Principal Secretary, Ms. Rebecca Loustau-Lalanne, General Manager-Commercial of SEYPEC, Mr Conrard Benoiton, SEYPEC Commercial Manager, Mrs Sarah Romain and Director General at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jacques Belle.
